Class Descriptions

            

Sabot Sailing

The Naples Sabot is the boat for sailors 8-12 years old. Several classes are available which cater to sailors of different abilities. Sabots are challenging to sail and help prepare sailors for Lasers, 420’s and beyond.

Bronze Sabot is a learn to sail class for young sailors with little to no experience in sailing. The minimum age to participate is 8. Sailors learn in the Naples Sabot, a singlehanded dinghy. Bronze class offers the opportunity to learn fundamental sailing skills in a fun and challenging environment. The curriculum covers fundamental safety, sailing skills, boat parts, terminology, knots and rigging. The environment is kept fun, light and above all-safe.

Silver Sabot  is for sailors with at an intermediate level. Sailors eligible to enroll have successfully completed the Bronze level. This class blends sailing skills with several important seamanship skills including boat handling, safety position and upwind sailing.

Gold Sabot is for advanced Sabot sailors. It is the third step in the CYC Sabot Certification process. Curriculum focuses on refining the skills learned in both Bronze and Silver, while introducing fundamental race skills and knowledge.

Sabot C3 is an introductory racing class. The focus is on preparing for sailing regattas hosted by area Yacht Clubs. Sailors are required to have mastered the skills in Gold class prior to registering. The curriculum focuses on strong sailing skills, drills, teamwork, sportsmanship, racing and much more.

The Sabot Race Team is for those who compete in the Sabot A, B or C Fleet. Depending on the number of racers, this team may be separated by fleet. This class will develop and refine more advanced racing skills that prepare sailors for success at regattas and ultimately the Sabot Nationals. Extensive prior racing experience is a must. The class follows a fast paced curriculum to build specific racing skills through drills, discussions of strategy and tactics. Racers skills are constantly critiqued and analyzed to promote maximum growth and improvement prior to Sabot Nationals.

 

Laser/Laser Radial Sailing

Lasers and Laser Radials are very fast, fun and popular boats. They are excellent for sailors who have mastered the sabot and are looking for a new challenge. Sailors must be at least 12 years of age. The skills learned aboard the Laser can be used on any boat. Lasers can be quite physical to sail. They are raced on the local, international, and Olympic levels. Recommended sailing weight for Laser Radials is 100 – 145 pounds. Those above 145 pounds are best suited for full rig Lasers. 

Junior Advanced/Laser Lasers and Laser Radials are very fast, fun and popular boats. They are excellent for sailors who have mastered the sabot and are looking for a new challenge. Sailors must be at least 11 years of age or have permission from the Head Coach and Junior Director to enroll . The skills learned aboard the Laser can be used on any boat. Lasers can be quite physical to sail. This class will focus on learning boat control through sail trim and body positioning. 

Junior Advanced/Laser Race Lasers and Laser Radials are very fast, fun and popular boats. Sailors must be at least 12 years of age or have permission from the Head Coach and Junior Director to enroll. The skills learned aboard the Laser can be used on any boat. This class will focus on taking sailors with previous Laser experience to the next level on the race course. Sailors will build on boat control skills and techniques on the race course, while thinking critically about tactics.

420 Trapeze/Spinnaker Sailing

The 420 is sailed by a crew of two, therefore incorporating teamwork. 420's are the primary boat for local, national and international youth events. Skipper’s must be a CYC Jr. Program participant, Silver (Level II) certified, at least 11 years of age and approved by the Jr. Program Director.

Intro to Doublehanded: Trapeze/Spinnaker is ideal for sailors who have mastered the Sabot and are ready for doublehanded experience. Topics include safety on the trapeze, rig and sailing a spinnaker, body positioning and terminology. Sailors must be 13 years and up.

Advanced 420: Trapeze/Spinnaker Is for sailors 12 years and up with Head Coach and Junior Director permission. It is intended for racers who have extensive experience both racing and in a doublehanded boat with spinnaker and trapeze experience. The goal is to develop sailors for local and national regattas.

29er Sailing

This is a bring your own boat (BYOB) class for the most advanced sailors in our program. Pre-requisite for this class is lots of sailing skill and a desire to GO FAST!


Other Class Options

Intro to High School FJ This is a dynamic, challenging class for sailors 12 years old and up. The class is appropriate for novices through advanced sailors. It is an ideal class for sailors who are interested in sailing year-round at the high school level. The curriculum includes specialized crewing and skippering techniques and teaching “tricks” about the FJ.

Intro to 420/Laser is a fun class that gives kids 11+ on opportunity to get into two bigger dinghy’s. It’s appropriate for those with or without previous sailing experience. Kids should expect to learn how to rig both boats, the basics of their boat handling and have an opportunity to sail both single and doublehanded.

Scallywags is a great way to introduce your youngster to sailing. This class is only offered during the summer months. The minimum age is 6 and your child must have completed kindergarten. During the week kids will be exposed to sailing in a very safe, controlled environment. An instructor or Junior Instructor will be on every boat. The emphasis of the  course is on fun and comfort on the water…just wait until your sailor comes home talking about pirate day, the trip to Stringray Point and so much more! Classes run from 9:30am-12:30. Please pack a snack.
